I am in the process of rewriting my business plan at the moment. I am going to be hitting the 3rd anniversary of setting up my business in October and I have been trying to spend a bit of time working ON my business and working out where I want it to go over the next year or two.
I had bought a book when I started called “The Consulting Bible” and I put it on my shelf and never read it. I kept on meaning to and often picked it up and moved it around my office. I never managed to actually read it though!
I am so glad that I picked it up this week. I have spent the week eating the book up and started & finished it within a couple of days.
So much of it reflected my journey so far. He had captured many of the things that I had done well and many of the mistakes I have made. I learned so much from this book and it is one I will have to go back and read again. I would highly recommend it to any entrepreneur.
Here are some of the concepts I really liked from the book
- Role of a consultant is to improve the clients condition by applying and transferring skills to benefit the other person
- Value trumps fees
- Streamline the delivery model
- A contractor works for the buyer, at the buyers direction and discretion. There is no intellectual capital and usually paid by the hour
- A consultant improves the clients condition by providing skills, behaviour ,content, advice and experience. They provide intellectual property and fees are usually based on value
- Identify the need, have the competency and have a passion for the brand
I thought it was a great read!
